Variables Used
Mach Index - Mach Index is the ratio of the velocity of the gases flow area to the speed of sound. In engines, it is a mathematical expression of the inlet velocity, relative to the speed of sound.
Cylinder Diameter - (Measured in Meter) - Cylinder Diameter is the diameter of the cylinder of an engine.
Inlet Valve Diameter - (Measured in Meter) - Inlet Valve Diameter is the diameter of the inlet valve of the engine through which the fuel-air mixture is drawn into the cylinder.
Mean Piston Speed - (Measured in Meter per Second) - Mean Piston Speed is the average speed of the piston over one engine revolution.
Flow Coefficient - The Flow Coefficient is a relative measure of the efficiency at allowing fluid flow.
Sonic Velocity - (Measured in Meter per Second) - Sonic Velocity is speed of sound is the distance travelled per unit of time by a sound wave as it propagates through an elastic medium.
STEP 1: Convert Input(s) to Base Unit
Cylinder Diameter: 85 Centimeter --> 0.85 Meter (Check conversion here)
Inlet Valve Diameter: 2 Centimeter --> 0.02 Meter (Check conversion here)
Mean Piston Speed: 1.1 Centimeter per Second --> 0.011 Meter per Second (Check conversion here)
Flow Coefficient: 11.8 --> No Conversion Required
Sonic Velocity: 340 Centimeter per Second --> 3.4 Meter per Second (Check conversion here)
STEP 2: Evaluate Formula
Substituting Input Values in Formula
Z = ((D/Di)^2)*((sp)/(qf*a)) --> ((0.85/0.02)^2)*((0.011)/(11.8*3.4))
Evaluating ... ...
Z = 0.495233050847458
STEP 3: Convert Result to Output's Unit
0.495233050847458 --> No Conversion Required
FINAL ANSWER
0.495233050847458 0.495233 <-- Mach Index

Inlet-Valve Mach Index Formula

Mach Index = ((Cylinder Diameter/Inlet Valve Diameter)^2)*((Mean Piston Speed)/(Flow Coefficient*Sonic Velocity))
Z = ((D/Di)^2)*((sp)/(qf*a))

What is the effect of high mach index on the inlet valve closing ?

At high Mach Index Values the cylinder pressure may be well below inlet pressure at Bottom Dead Center. In this case, delaying the inlet valve closing allows more flow into the cylinder up to the time when the inlet and cylinder pressures reach equality. Thus, the higher the value of the Mach Index, the later the inlet valve should be closed to increase, or maintain volumetric efficiency.

How to Calculate Inlet-Valve Mach Index?

Inlet-Valve Mach Index calculator uses Mach Index = ((Cylinder Diameter/Inlet Valve Diameter)^2)*((Mean Piston Speed)/(Flow Coefficient*Sonic Velocity)) to calculate the Mach Index, The Inlet-Valve Mach Index formula is defined as ratio of gas velocity through the inlet valve at the smallest flow area to the inlet sonic velocity. Mach Index is denoted by Z symbol.
